Even if You Can’t Buy It, Happiness Is Big Business

he stock market has been on a roller coaster, banks are going under, unemployment is skyrocketing, and foreclosed homes pepper the landscape. What better time for a happiness conference?

In this dopamine-laden city, where the pursuit of well-being is something of a high art, a motley array of scientists, philosophers, doctors, psychologists, navel-gazing Googlers and Tibetan Buddhists addressed the latest findings on the science of human happiness — or eudaemonia, the classical Greek term for human flourishing.

Planned before the current crises, the first American “Happiness and Its Causes” conference was equal parts Aristotle and Oprah. It brought together heavy hitters like Paul Ekman, the psychologist known for deciphering facial “microexpressions” that reveal feelings, and Robert Sapolsky, the Stanford biologist. They considered topics like “Compassion and the Pursuit of Happiness” and “Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers.”

The conference is the latest manifestation of the booming happiness industry, subject of a growing number of books, scholarly research papers and academic courses. The concept began in Sydney in 2006 and has since expanded, its profile raised by the participation of the Dalai Lama in Sydney in 2007. read more

Detroit Marshals for Bailout Bid

When Detroit's Big Three automakers return to Capitol Hill next week to re-plead their case for a $25 billion emergency loan, they may be flanked by a posse of supporters.

A plan is taking shape for auto suppliers, dealers and factory workers to caravan from Detroit to Washington in American-made, fuel-efficient vehicles. The National Automobile Dealers Association is considering flying in dealers from around the country to deliver the "message of Main Street," underscoring the urgency of the industry's crisis.

Discussions on the lobbying efforts began last week immediately after the top executives from Ford, General Motors and Chrysler appeared before a skeptical Congress, setting off a wave of anger and frustration within the auto industry.

"It was clear from the comments from the members of Congress that what they knew about Detroit pretty much stopped at 1999," said Peter M. De Lorenzo, a former automotive advertising executive and editor of the Autoextremist.com blog, a must-read for industry insiders. "They regurgitated all the same stuff: Detroit doesn't make vehicles anyone wants. Detroit doesn't have high-tech expertise. Detroit doesn't make fuel-efficient cars." read more

OPEC Leaves Oil Output Unchanged

The world's major oil producers have announced no immediate plans to cut output, keeping alive hopes of low petrol prices for motorists this Christmas.

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Companies (Opec) said after its meeting in Cairo that it would wait until a conference in Algeria on December 17 to decide whether to reduce crude supplies.

So it could be that, as the RAC has predicted, UK drivers will be paying as little as 88p for a litre of unleaded petrol in late December.

But while low oil prices bring cheer to many, for Opec members they are a very different proposition.

In fact, for Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar and the UAE, the sudden collapse of the price of oil is something of a disaster.

According to research by Deutsche Bank, Venezuela needs to see oil at $95 a barrel to balance its current account. Even the oil titan Saudi Arabia needs oil at $54 to do the same.

Three months ago crude oil peaked at $147 a barrel; today it threatens to fall below $50. It's a fair bet that some Opec countries are pumping oil at a loss. read more

Uncertain outlook for container shipping

THE container shipping business is expected to grow below 6% next year due to the US recession and the contraction in the European market.

Maersk Line Malaysia country manager Omar Shamsie said the liner business should see a growth rate of between 5% and 6% this year.

“The outlook for container shipping and world trade is very uncertain due to the developments in both the world economy and the financial markets,” he told StarBiz.

“Consumers in the US and Europe are now holding back and we can expect to see the decrease in demand continue for quite some time,” he said.

Container shipping has seen significant growth over the last 30 years, with the yearly growth rate being 10% on average.

Omar said that even during the worst downturn in 2001, the growth rate was 4%, while in the best years, the shipping industry had enjoyed a double-digit rate.

“The coming months will be tough but Maersk Line is prepared and will try first and foremost to hold on to our current business,” he said.

Omar said container liners had already been taking steps to counteract the negative effects of the downturn, with many shipping companies, including Maersk Line, reducing capacity on the Asia-Europe routes. read more

US ethanol sector to shrink

In the ethanol industry's infancy, small, locally owned plants were the way for farmers to capitalize on a booming industry.

Then, all of a sudden, Wall Street found out there was money in ethanol and jumped on board.

Today, the industry is struggling due somewhat to the global economic recession and bad gambles made by certain players. Wall Street is shying away from ethanol as it deals with its own financial turmoil.

Speaking at the American Bankers Assn.'s Agricultural Bankers Conference in November, Mark Lakers of Agribusiness & Food Associates said as many as 40 ethanol plants could be bankrupt by early next year of the roughly 175 plants currently under construction or on line.

Logan Caldwell, president of Houston Biofuels Consultants, added that the ethanol industry "is not immune to the laws of supply and demand" as it sifts out players who are not profitable.

The biggest player, VeraSun, is already bankrupt. It owns 16 plants in the Midwest (Map).

Ian Horowitz, energy analyst for Soleil Securities Group Inc., explained that VeraSun had a "foot on the floor and became too big too fast". read more

Ditech Networks Reports Q2 FY09 Financial Results

Conference Call

A conference call is a telephone call in which the calling party wishes to have more than one called party listen in to the audio portion of the call. The conference calls may be designed to allow the called party to participate during the call, or the call may be set up so that the called party merely listens into the call and cannot speak. It is often referred to as an ATC (Audio Tele-Conference).

Conference calls can be designed so that the calling party calls the other participants and adds them to the call. In most cases, the participants are able call into the conference call themselves, by dialing into a special telephone number that connects to a "conference bridge" (a specialized type of equipment that links telephone lines).

Usually, most companies use a specialized service provider who maintains the conference bridge, or who provides the phone numbers and PIN codes that participants dial to access the meeting or conference call.

Three-way calling is available (usually at an extra charge) for most customers on their home or office phone line. To three way call, the first person one wishes to talk to is dialed. Then the Hook flash button is pressed and the other person's phone number is dialed. While it is ringing, flash is pressed again. This will put the three people together. This option allows callers to add a second outgoing call to an already connected call.

Usage

Business

Businesses use conference calls daily to meet with remote parties, both internally and outside of their company. Common applications are client meetings or sales presentations, project meetings and updates, regular team meetings, training classes and communication to employees who work in different locations. Conference calling is viewed as a primary means of cutting travel costs and allowing workers to be more productive by not having to go out-of-office for meetings.

Conference calls are used by nearly all United States public corporations to report their quarterly results. These calls usually allow for questions from stock analysts and are called earnings calls. A standard conference call begins with a disclaimer stating that anything said in the duration of the call may be a forward looking statement, and that results may vary significantly. The CEO, CFO, or Investor Relations officer then will read the company's quarterly report. Lastly, the call is opened for questions from analysts.

Conference calls are increasingly used in conjunction with web conferences, where presentations or documents are shared via the internet.

Conference calls are also beginning to cross over into the world of podcasting and social networking, which in turn fosters new kinds of interaction patterns. Live streaming or broadcasting of conference calls allows a larger audience access to the call without dialing in to a bridge. Party line

Conference calls can also be used for entertainment or social purposes, such as the party line or a group call. People call in to a specified telephone number, and are connected to conversations with other callers. This serves as a way to talk to and perhaps, subsequently, meet new people. However, conference calls are most commonly used by businesses.

Flat Rate Conferencing

Flat rate services are now being offered which enable conference call users to have unlimited access to a conference bridge at a fixed monthly cost. Because telecommunication carriers offer free long distance bundled with local service, this alternative is gaining widespread popularity for budget conscious businesses and non-profits.

In the UK, there are conference services offered on a pay as you go basis where the cost of the phone calls (using 0844, 0870 or 0871 numbers) from each of the participants covers the cost of the conference service. With this service type there is no monthly charge and usually no contracts to sign.

Prepaid Conference Calls

Prepaid conference call services allow businesses and individuals to purchase conferencing services online, and conduct conference calls on a pay-as-you-go basis. Typically, a conference call PIN and its associated calling instructions are displayed immediately online after being purchased and/or sent via email. Generally, prepaid conference call services are used with a landline telephone, mobile phone, or computer, and there is no need to buy additional expensive telecommunications hardware or add/switch long distance service. Some services allow you to start or join a conference call from virtually any country worldwide--with appropriate telephone access.

Large telecommunications providers such as AT&T, Embarq (formerly Sprint), Verizon and other large to medium conferencing service providers maintain a dominant position in the conferencing niche; servicing many of the World's biggest brands. However, the Internet and improved global VoIP networks have helped to significantly reduce the barrier of entry into this niche.

Free Conference Calling

Several vendors in the US now offer free conference calling. Such services generally require users to dial a long-distance phone number to be connected to their conference.

Free conferencing is different from traditional conference calling where the organizer of the conference call pays either a flat rate fee or per minute charge or a mixture of both. It has no organizer fees and allows for multiple people to meet at the price of their long distance connections.

Web conferencing

Web conferencing is used to conduct live meetings or presentations over the Internet. In a web conference, each participant sits at his or her own computer and is connected to other participants via the internet. This can be either a downloaded application on each of the attendees computers or a web-based application where the attendees will simply enter a URL (website address) to enter the conference.

A webinar is a neologism to describe a specific type of web conference. It is typically one-way [1], from the speaker to the audience with limited audience interaction, such as in a webcast. A webinar can be collaborative [1] and include polling and question & answer sessions to allow full participation between the audience and the presenter. In some cases, the presenter may speak over a standard telephone line, pointing out information being presented on screen and the audience can respond over their own telephones, preferably a speaker phone. There are web conferencing technologies on the market that have incorporated the use of VoIP audio technology, to allow for a truly web-based communication. Webinars may (depending upon the provider) provide hidden or anonymous participant functionality, enabling paticipants to be unaware of other participants in the same meeting.

In the early years of the Internet, the terms "web conferencing" was often used to describe a group discussion in a message board and therefore not live. The term has evolved to refer specifically to live or "synchronous" meetings.

* Polls and surveys (allows the presenter to conduct questions with multiple choice answers directed to the audience)
* Screen sharing/desktop sharing/application sharing (where participants can view anything the presenter currently has shown on their screen. Some screen sharing applications allow for remote desktop control, allowing participants to manipulate the presenters screen, although this is not widely used.)

Web conferencing is often sold as a service, hosted on a web server controlled by the vendor. Offerings vary per vendor but most hosted services provide a cost per user per minute model, a monthly flat fee model and a seat model. Some vendors also provide a server side solution which allows the customer to host their own web conferencing service on their own servers.
An important capability of web conferencing software is application sharing, the ability for one party in the conference to share an application (such as a web browser, spread sheet, etc.) from their desk top with every one else in the meeting and pass the control of the application to someone else in the meeting.[citation needed]

Standards

Web conferencing technologies are not standardized, which has been a significant factor in the lack of interoperability, platform dependence, security issues, cost and market segmentation. In 2003, the IETF established a working group to establish a standard for web conferencing, called "Centralized Conferencing (xcon)" [3]. The planned deliverables of xcon include:

* A basic floor control protocol. Binary Floor Control Protocol (BFCP)[4] published as RFC 4582
* A mechanism for membership and authorization control
* A mechanism to manipulate and describe media "mixing" or "topology" for multiple media types (audio, video, text)

State investigating TUSD over perks from company

State officials are investigating a million-dollar contract between the Tucson Unified School District and a company that makes high-tech "whiteboards," looking into whether the district received inappropriate perks after it awarded the lucrative contract.
State investigators are asking questions about an educational summit and conference the company held in Tucson after receiving the contract that included free lodging at a high-end resort for five TUSD employees and paid positions for four others, according to documents obtained by the Arizona Daily Star and interviews with sources close to the inquiry.
